What to do first

  1. Stop sending water to the system

No laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing until a truck arrives. Every gallon you add is a gallon that comes back up the lowest drain. Turn off a running toilet or a dripping faucet.

  2. Check the alarm and the breaker

If the house has a pump chamber or aerobic unit, a buzzer or red light means the pump has stopped. Silence the alarm, check the breaker, and tell the company which panel you have.

  3. Sort out where it is showing up

One fixture only: likely a plumbing clog. Every low drain, or wastewater at the tank lids or over the field: septic. Note whether it started after rain or heavy use.

  4. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear

Keep children and pets off wet ground near the tank and field, avoid contact with standing wastewater, and do not drive or park over the field lines.

  5. Find the lids

If you know where the tank lids are, clear access for the hose. If not, say so; locating and digging is a separate charge.

Full tank, failed field, or blocked line?

An emergency visit is partly a pump-out and partly a diagnosis; ask for both. When the company opens the tank, the liquid level tells most of the story. A level at the normal line with sewage still in the house points to a blockage between the house and the tank, which a plumber or a jetting service clears. A level above the outlet pipe, or a tank that is full again days after it was pumped, means the drain field is not accepting water. A tank that has simply gone too long without service is the easy case: pumping fixes it.

Pumping a tank that is backing up because of the field gives relief for a few days while the field drains or a repair permit is processed. It is not a repair, and a company that keeps selling pump-outs for a field problem is not doing you a favor. Ask for the liquid level, baffle condition and field observations in writing on the invoice; that record is what a septic inspection and the county’s repair process will build on.

Heavy rain and septic backups in Hamilton County

Rain, not cold, is the local emergency season. Lovell Field averages 52.48 inches a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), and December through March bring 20.64 of them, when evaporation is lowest and the county’s clay soils stay saturated for weeks. On August 12, 2025, 6.42 inches fell in a single day, the second-wettest day since records began in 1879; Wolftever Creek near Ooltewah ran at 1,650 cubic feet per second, East Ridge, Brainerd and East Brainerd were hardest hit, and the county declared a local state of emergency.

After an event like that, a drain field in Talbott or Collegedale clay (“moderately slow permeability,” per NRCS) has nowhere to send water, so backups appear in houses whose systems are otherwise sound. Cut water use hard for a few days, do not have the tank pumped while the surrounding ground is flooded (an empty tank can shift or float, and many companies will decline until the water drops), and watch whether the field recovers once the soil drains. A field that stays wet in dry weather needs an inspection. Our post on heavy rain and septic backups goes deeper.

What an emergency visit typically costs

ItemTypical range
Septic tank pumping, by tank size: 750 / 1,000 / 1,250 / 1,500 gal$175–$300 / $225–$400 / $300–$600 / $345–$600
After-hours, weekend or holiday call-outvaries; ask before dispatch
Extra for an unknown or buried lid (locating and digging)varies; ask for a flat fee
Pump repair / replacement, if a pump failure caused the backup$250–$400 / $1,000+
Hamilton County repair permit, if the field needs work (government fee)$40

Typical national ranges from Fixr (2025) and HomeAdvisor (2026) — estimates, not quotes. Hamilton County fees are government charges, not contractor prices.

Expect an after-hours surcharge on top of the pumping price and get it as a figure before the truck is dispatched. We say “same or next day if available” because that is what independent companies can honestly offer. The cost guide has the full price context.

Who comes out, and what happens next

The companies that respond are independent septic pumpers and installers. For pumping they need a TDEC Septic Tank Pumping Contractor permit (Rule 0400-48-01-.20) and a Hamilton County pumper license; for any repair that follows, a TDEC installer permit and county installer license, with your $40 repair permit from Hamilton County Groundwater Protection (423-209-7876). Under Rule .13(2), a malfunctioning system can draw a written notice giving the owner up to 30 days to repair it, and the county takes complaints, so a backup that has reached the yard is worth handling promptly.

Septic Pumping Chattanooga does not pump, repair or dispatch anything. The independent companies you reach through the quote form do the work; describe the symptoms, your location and whether the lids are exposed, and we usually reply the same day. Once the immediate problem is handled, routine pumping on a three-to-five-year cycle is the cheapest way to avoid the next call.

Emergency septic service FAQ

How fast can an emergency septic company get to me?

Independent companies in the Chattanooga area can usually come the same or next day if a truck is available; weekends and the days after a major storm fill up fastest. We do not dispatch trucks or promise arrival times. Send the request through the quote form or call, describe what is backing up and where, and the companies that reply will tell you their earliest slot and any after-hours charge.

Can heavy rain cause a septic backup?

Yes. When the soil around the drain field is saturated it cannot accept more liquid, so the tank stays full and the lowest drains in the house back up. Chattanooga averages 52.48 inches of rain a year, with 19.6 inches from December through March (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), and August 12, 2025 brought 6.42 inches in one day. Cut water use until the ground drains; if the problem persists in dry weather, the field itself needs a look.

I just had my tank pumped and it is backing up again. Why?

A tank that refills to the outlet within days is not the problem; the drain field or the line between house and tank is. Either the field is not accepting water, or something is blocking the inlet or outlet. Pumping again buys a few days at most. Ask the company that pumped it what the liquid level and baffles looked like, then get a septic inspection to find out which it is before paying for a third pump-out.

Do I call a plumber or a septic company for a sewage backup?

Check which fixtures are affected. One slow toilet or sink is almost always a plumbing clog inside the house, which a plumber clears. Every low drain backing up at once, gurgling when the washer drains, or wet ground over the tank or field points to the septic system. If the tank was pumped recently and is full again, start with a septic company. When in doubt, describe both symptoms and let the first company that arrives say which it is.

Is a septic backup the landlord’s responsibility in Hamilton County?

Hamilton County is covered by Tennessee’s Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act. TCA 66-28-304 requires a landlord to “make all repairs and do whatever is necessary to put and keep the premises in a fit and habitable condition,” and TCA 66-28-502 gives tenants remedies when essential services fail. TDEC Rule .13 also puts septic maintenance on the property owner. Check the current statute or ask a tenant-rights attorney; this is general information, not legal advice.
